A Day in Thimphu

This morning, after a hearty breakfast, set out to explore Thimphu, Bhutan's captivating capital. Begin your journey at the historic Simtoka Dzong, one of the oldest fortress monasteries in the kingdom. Built in 1629, its ancient walls hold centuries of stories and sacred traditions that your guide will share with you.

Next, ascend to the magnificent Buddha Dordenma statue. Standing proudly at 51.5 metres, this massive bronze and gold structure commands breathtaking views over the Thimphu valley. The statue houses over 100,000 smaller Buddha statues, each meticulously crafted.

Delve into Bhutanese culture at Simply Bhutan, an immersive living museum where local artisans demonstrate traditional crafts. Watch weaving demonstrations, try your hand at traditional games, and perhaps dress in traditional Bhutanese attire.

Tiger's Nest Monastery

The hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery, or Taktsang Lhakhang, stands as the crown jewel of any journey to Bhutan. This remarkable monastery clings to a sheer cliff face 3,120 metres above the Paro Valley, its white and gold facades seemingly defying gravity.

Your ascent begins in the early morning, following an ancient path through fragrant pine forests. The trail winds upward, offering tantalising glimpses of your destination through the trees. Prayer flags dance in the mountain breeze, their colours stark against the blue sky, while the sound of distant temple bells carries on the wind.

After approximately two hours of climbing, reach the famous viewpoint where the monastery appears to float amongst the clouds. The final approach includes descending and ascending steep stone steps carved into the cliff face, leading to this architectural marvel.

Inside Tiger's Nest, discover richly decorated temples, sacred shrines, and meditation caves where Guru Rinpoche is said to have arrived on the back of a flying tigress. Today's journey takes you to Chelela Pass, Bhutan's highest motorable point at 3,988 metres. The winding ascent leads through ancient forests where gnarled rhododendrons and towering blue pines create a mystical atmosphere. As you climb higher, the vegetation gradually thins, revealing breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas.

At the summit, prayer flags whip in the crisp mountain air as you gaze upon the magnificent peaks of Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey. - This rate is valid for only Indian passport holder. For other nationals, there is an additional supplement cost of US$ 640 per person for the Bhutan government sustainable development fee.

The tour starts and ends in Bagdogra. A shared transfer is arranged from Bagdogra to Thimphu on day 1 and from Paro to Bagdogra on day 7. You can fly in and out of Bagdogra airport (airport code: IXB). Alternatively, you can fly in and out of Paro airport (airport code: PBH). In this case, we can arrange a transfer to Thimphu for an additional cost or you may arrange the transfer yourself.

All foreign travellers will require a valid passport. The passport should have a validity for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. Foreign travellers will require a visa for entry into Bhutan. Indian citizens do not need a visa to visit Bhutan. However, they must carry either a passport (with at least six months of validity).

Additionally, Indians traveling to Bhutan require a permit, which can be obtained upon arrival at the entry points, such as Phuentsholing or Paro, or online via Bhutan’s official immigration portal. The permit is necessary for visiting regions like Thimphu and Paro, and a special permit is required for other areas like Punakha or Haa Valley. It is recommended to check the latest requirements on the official Embassy website.

There are no activities scheduled for the first day. The standard check-in time at the hotel would be 1400 hrs, and you can plan your arrival accordingly

You can depart anytime. Generally, there are no inclusions on the tour on the last day. The hotel check-out time is usually 11:00 hrs or 12 noon.

Children under 12 are not allowed on this Jrny. Children above 12 are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Normally, yes! In some cases if the exact hotels are unavailable for any reason, we'll make sure you're put up in hotels that are equivalent to the original in terms of location and facilities. Rest assured, your stay will be as promised.

Please refer to the daily activities in the itinerary, where the driving distance and duration for each day are given. The longest drive on this tour is approx 8-10 hrs (depending on traffic) from Bagdogra to Thimphu.

Vegetarian options will be available, but might be somewhat limited. The same is true for vegan options.

April is a delightful time to visit Bhutan, as the country experiences pleasant spring weather with clear skies and blooming landscapes. Daytime temperatures typically range from 15°C to 25°C, while evenings can be cooler, especially in higher-altitude areas like Thimphu and Paro. Rainfall is minimal during this month, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as trekking and sightseeing.
